Annual Report 2019

Partnership

For 96 years, our long-term partnerships have been the key to our success.

In May 2019, LC Packaging and Veolia entered a strategic partnership aimed at minimising residual waste streams related to flexible packaging on a global scale. This circular programme focuses on optimising the recovery and upcycling of flexible packaging after-use, instead of the situation today, whereby the vast percentage of flexible packaging still ends up incinerated or as landfill. LC Packaging and Veolia Netherlands have already commenced upon the implementation of this Circular Programme in a test pilot phase, in cooperation with a selected number of highly motivated and sustainably-minded LC Packaging customers. Once proven, the aim is to expand this closed loop approach to the activities of many more customers, industries and supply chain partners that fall under the scope of LC Packaging’s complete flexible packaging portfolio.

To turn used big bags into big bags once more, LC Packaging and Starlinger joined forces in 2019 and managed to develop circular packaging for big bags made of polypropylene fabric.

The first tests have shown that fabric with a high proportion of recycled polypropylene granulate (rPP) can be used to produce new big bags.

In December 2019, LC Packaging had the honour of hosting the ‘SDGs in Practice’ event for members of FBNed – Association of Family Businesses in the Netherlands. As LC Packaging is identified as a frontrunner in sustainability, together with fellow family business Van Wijhe Verf, we were asked to share our experience of our journey towards sustainability, the added value of implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into our strategy, and our EcoVadis Gold Ranking. We welcomed around 60 enthusiastic participants and during and after the event, we received positive responses and had interesting discussions on how sustainability goes hand in hand with the way family businesses do business: a sustainable future for the next generation.

The bags show the same quality as the bags made out of virgin material when it comes to tensile strength, weight and safety factor. In October 2019, Starlinger showcased the bag at the K-fair.
LC Packaging will present the 50% rPP bag in May, during Interpack 2020 in Düsseldorf, Germany. More information can be found on
