Sustainable packaging is the future
In the upcoming years, machine-erected boxes and punnets will continue to advance. Namely because of choices retailers now make and of course because of its recyclability advantages. We will continue to develop our range of products, further improving our packaging solutions and challenging ourselves to come up with new and better ways to be our customers’ favourite partner in packaging. At the same time, we are taking significant steps in the FIBC market, which are also recyclable and around which many sustainability initiatives have been developed, producing high quality big bags for some very important multinationals. We are taking our teams to the Champions League of packaging and we are very excited about it!

Own production
Next to on-site box erecting machines, we have two box-erecting stations attached to our offices. What once started as a small box-erecting station at our location in Sint Truiden is now a fully equipped production site, specialised in all sorts of hard and soft fruit cardboard packaging. We have done the same thing for the vegetable and tomato market at our second location in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. In 2020, we placed additional box-erecting machines to create even more capacity, specifically for punnets.

We also have our own production facility for high quality cardboard sheets, Pacapime. This means that we are strongly involved in any strategic decisions made with regards to for example investments, HR and capacity development. Pacapime produces the cardboard sheets we then erect for and sell to our customers. Next to our location in Belgium, Pacapime also has a production facility in Hungary which is strongly connected to our local LC office.

Long-term relationships
We do not sell packaging, we offer a packaging solution. I strongly believe this is why we often have long-term relationships with our customers in which we develop together. One of the best examples of our packaging solutions are the box-erecting machines we can install at our customers location; a complete service in which we excel. Our dedicated mechanic service team helps us to unburden our customers as much as we can. That way, the customer can focus on what he does best, while we focus on what we do best.

Cardboard

Starting at LC Packaging 25 years ago as a Sales Representative, I already experienced an environment with room to take initiative. It has enabled me to grow at a fast pace and this is what I hope to convey to my team as well.

As a manager, I find it important to give my team the trust and support they need to develop themselves. There is room for entrepreneurship and a lot of our colleagues operate autonomous. We all make mistakes, but it’s the way in which we solve them that we can learn from. This is what makes LC Packaging such a great place to work.

Committed, Reliable, Loyal
In Belgium we have 2 offices with warehouses in Sint-Kathelijne-Waver and Sint Truiden and our cardboard production facility Pacapime in Halle. At our office and warehouse we employ about 40 – 60 colleagues depending on the season. Most of our  colleagues have worked here for 15, 20 or even 25+ years! They are the personification of our three values with the upmost commitment, reliability and loyalty any employer can ask for. With this team, we offer our customers familiar faces with extensive knowledge of their business. Their professionalism and flexibility is essential for the markets our customers operate in. The pace in which we can scale up factory production and box-erecting capacity really does make a difference.

Growing our business
While I am mainly responsible for the cardboard business in Belgium, Koen Slaets, Sales Director FIBC, focuses on our big bag business. Here, we are specialised in selling specialty FIBCs for predominantly the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Our cardboard products consist of machine-erected boxes (trays), punnets, sleeves and cardboard components for the food industry. Specifically the fruit and vegetable market and the processed food market. The cardboard business is definitely on the rise now that sustainability is becoming an increasingly important subject for companies. Cardboard is one of the materials with the least environmental impact, easy recycling possibilities and plenty options for reuse, while still very versatile in its models and designs. I am proud to say that we are a top player in our field. We are the absolute number one with regards to machine-erected boxes and punnet sales are growing significantly now that the demand for sustainable, consumer-sized packaging is increasing.

Versatile and independent
2020 was a good year for us. Because we have our inhouse production and a large stock, we experienced little trouble related to the Covid-19 pandemic as we were still able to deliver all necessary bags to our customers. What will happen in 2021? I really don’t know. We also have clients in the automotive industry, which is having a tough time right now. It is more difficult to predict our customers’ needs for the upcoming years as the pandemic hits everyone differently. Will they need the same volumes or less? Luckily, because we have a lot of customers in various sectors, we are not dependent on just one trade and very versatile.. I am very optimistic about our future!

One big family
We have about 30 people in our team, who have all worked here for a long time. Some I have known since they were children and some have known me since I was a child. It feels like we have one big family here and I have felt this too ever since we became a member of the LC family. I don’t think I have seen my LC colleagues as often as I have in the past 12 months, thanks to Microsoft Teams. It is great to see how we are able to support each other and to receive that support from LC International as well.

Quality and Service
Quality and service are two of our most valuable attributes and very important in times like these. Many of our customers have been working with us for many years now and I am happy to hear that they feel we are a strong and knowledgeable partner to them. We are a reliable and committed supplier who will always give them 100%. This is also what I, as a manager, want to give to my team. We are all striving for the same thing. Working with our head and our heart.

feels like family

I started my career at a bank. After 5 years, I decided to go home to support my father in the company. This is when I first become part of Karl Weiterer (Weiterer), the company my grandfather founded in 1918. That makes me the 3rd generation, something I’m very proud of. Because our home was, and still is, on the same land as the company, I grew up around bags. My sister and I often spent school holidays working in the office or in production, learning a lot about the business early on.

Karl Weiterer
Karl Weiterer services the agricultural sector in Germany, while the German LC Packaging affiliate takes care of the more industrial markets. At Weiterer, we sell big bags, jute, raschel, PP, PE, cotton and paper, but also sewing yarn and sewing machines to be placed at a customer’s location, as well as all kind of accessories to close bags or load them safely on pallets. We have our own printing services for jute and polypropylene bags and a 6000mwarehouse, packed with products, enabling us to excel in short-term deliveries.

More than 30 years of partnership
Art Lammers, former CEO of LC Packaging, and my father had known each other for a really long time and I remember Art visited us with his son Lucas (Lammers, now CEO of LC Packaging) when I was a teenager. Together we sat there, listening to our fathers talking about the business. Art always had an interest in working with Weiterer and wanted us to become partners, but my father was not interested in such a close partnership with LC. At that time, LC Packaging was our supplier for raschel bags from the Far East. This changed when I officially took over the helm and started importing our own containers from China. After that, our business with LC went a little bit quiet, but I always stayed in contact with Lucas and he always reminded me that LC was there if we ever needed anything. In 2013, Weiterer and LC Packaging officially resumed their partnership and in 2016 LC Packaging became a Weiterer shareholder. A happy end after nearly 30 years.

Executive board

Besides the executive board, Mr Paul Pissens and Mr Ludo Pissens are closely involved in all major decisions taken, in their capacity as shareholders and owners of Pacapime nv and non-executive members of the board.

In times of crises, it is especially important to hear what is on everyone’s mind and give our employees a voice. We learned to work together while on a distance and stayed in touch via Microsoft Teams. Despite its challenges, employee commitment has never been stronger. Our survey participation rate was 90% in 2020. and 94% says they are “proud to work for LC Packaging”.

Our employees are our most valuable asset. That is why we conduct our triennial Flow-surveys and follow-up sessions, in which teams within our company get together to share their thoughts and ideas on how we can create the best working environment possible, together. This approach lets us focus on the positive: ensuring that we are in the Flow as much as possible, individually and as a team, and feel enthusiastic about our workday on a regular basis.
