Our diversity, empathy, capacity for understanding and supporting each other’s ideas, makes LC Packaging West Africa unique and makes me very proud to belong to this young and strong family. As a leader and manager, I strongly believe that my number one priority is to ensure that my team is being looked after, is continuously growing within the company and always feels part of the LC family. Communicating and sharing knowledge is the best way to improve skills, learn from each other and grow. I also try to cultivate a true team spirit: we are all equally important for the success of our affiliate and LC as a whole. Success is achieved with group effort and commitment.
Cocoa, cement, copper and sand
The West African market is characterised by its cocoa production. Ivory Coast is the biggest cocoa producer and exporter in the world, with an annual production of 2.1 million tons. Together with Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon, they supply two thirds of the world’s cocoa export. It will come as no surprise that a big part of our business revolves around big bags for cacao. 90% of West African sales are FIBCs and 45% of these FIBCs are supplied to the biggest cocoa producers in the region.
Travelling, discovering new places and adventure really get me going! 3.5 years ago, when I joined LC Packaging, I was not only eager to learn about new products in different environments, but also excited to share my knowledge and contribute to the development of this young affiliate. The fact that every day at LC Packaging West Africa is a learning experience and a new challenge helps to always keep my level of enthusiasm up.

Connecting through our LC Story
Since the opening of our affiliate in 2015, connecting with our customers through the LC Story and offering a consistent quality product and service helped us successfully position ourselves as one of the leaders in packaging in the region. We are continuously gaining market share when it comes to FIBCs. The LC story, our values and the proven quality of our products are big contributors to the relationship and partnership we have with some of our most valued customers. One of our strengths is being always near. Customers appreciate our proximity, availability and knowledge of local culture. We are able to think of the right solution for them and provide them with the technical support they need.
First-of-its-kind container liners
Ivory Coast accounts for 60% of Africa's rubber output and ranks seventh in terms of global production. With that comes the export of raw cup lump. Exporting the cup lump in bulk containers generated important issues at the different ports, because of leakages and infestations, even leading to shipping lines paying huge fines to the ports. Dressing the containers to ship the cup lumps became crucial and essential. In addition to the liners, we managed to convince the customers to have regular assistance (manpower and supervision) for the installation of the liners on the remote sites, and they now understand and value our services. We are therefore working very hard on the development of a very specific container liner for the export of cup lumps. We are very proud to be the first player in the market offering a solution and very confident that it will succeed.
Africa is the future
Our West African team is young, committed and complimentary. Despite the cultural differences and differences in personality, we are all result oriented and work towards the same goal: offering the best service to our customers. I truly believe we have everything it takes to continue growing our market share: a highly motivated team, a quality product, a booming market and the LC Packaging story. As we like to say here: “AFRICA IS THE FUTURE”.

I’m proud of the fact that every relationship we are involved in, whether it is with colleagues, customers, our own factories, our production partners, the communities we operate in or the environment, our focus is always on long-term, win/win, sustainable relationships, rather than short-term gains. We don’t believe in only being loyal, committed and reliable to our customers, it is as important to be loyal, committed and reliable to each other.
Walk the walk
We have a small but dedicated team of between 11 and 14 in Ireland, depending on the season, but beyond our core team, we have a much wider team of colleagues in other countries that also very much contribute to our success. When things run smoothly, everything seems seamless and LC operates behind the scenes, sometimes without being noticed. But when there is a problem, we step forward and embrace the challenges head-on with our customers. Our added value is our service and our promise. We don’t just want to talk the talk; we’ll walk the walk hand in hand with our customers.
Since the age of 8 or 9, I fancied myself as an entrepreneur and during my early years I got great exposure to business principles through my parents’ family business. Fast-forward 30 something years, I am now the Managing Director of the Irish branch of our close-knit LC family.

Celebrate and share successes
I think to be a good manager you need to have an open mind and an appetite and willingness to keep learning, and I am lucky to be working with plenty of excellent role models within LC Packaging. To me it’s important to do the simple things right and do what needs to be done, to set a good example for my team, and to know when to step in and step out. It is important to recognise when the time is right to support and when to challenge and push colleagues outside of their comfort zone. It’s also important not only to work hard but also to celebrate and share in the successes we have together. It’s easy to put on paper what is important and what you believe in but it’s not as easy to deliver on these ideals, however we do strive to be the best we can be as managers and help our colleagues to do the same.
Leaders in the solid fuels market
In Ireland we have a broad range of products. We sell all types of FIBCs, both the traditional woven polypropylene bags and the newer high quality printed BOPP coated version, Leno and monofilament net bags with high quality BOPP printed film labels for high retail impact and branding, paper bags/sacks, whether valve sacks for industry or paper bags for potatoes and all in between, Jute bags and different types of PE films and bags. We are leaders in the solid fuels market and substantial players in the potato market, although there is room for growth and we are now ready to fully embrace and serve this market. We know we are world leaders in FIBCs and in Ireland we are strong in Aggregates, Animal Feed, Peat, and dry powders. Following the development at Dutch Bangla Pack, Ltd, the focus now is on the high-end food grade bag for the food and dairy industries, among others. Most importantly, we sell quality and our promise to be our customers’ favourite partner for quality packaging, with a reputation for innovation and sustainability, great customer service and added value.
A sustainable future
The future for Ireland is bright. We recently moved into new offices and are now in the process of completely re-vamping the warehouse and yard with a new loading bay, new cladding, new lighting, new racking, so soon the warehouse and yard will look like new. We are striving to realise our ambitious plans: that all our bags have QR codes that inform customers or the public with confidence and accuracy that none of our packaging goes to landfill, a minimal amount goes for incineration, but that the majority is reused, reconditioned or recycled in keeping with our circular approach. After 10 years of LC Packaging Ireland getting huge support from the group internationally, we now want to start contributing to growing our family globally. Apart from that, we want to remain a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable company.

Annual Report 2019
We have the best people, that is why our people are our greatest asset.
Employee surveys in the past have shown a desire for more training tools and personal development opportunities within our organisation.
LC Packaging invested in performance management over the past years by offering its people the possibility to attend external sessions and courses. We put the ‘development’ topic firmly on the agenda and in 2019, we launched the Talent LMS online training tool and knowledge database.

We do see a lot of opportunities to succeed in nurturing our talent even more and creating additional suitable opportunities, as 89% of our colleagues say there is still enough to learn at LC Packaging. To sustainably centralise and embed talent management within our international organisation, today and in the future, we have appointed a Learning and Development Manager, who will strengthen our HR team, starting from the beginning of 2020.

Expanding the Family
GRI Disclosure 102-8
LC Packaging is developing, innovating and expanding, and that means our family is expanding as well. Compared to January 2019, our workforce has expanded by about 8% on 1 January 2020, to 1,680 employees. This growth is due to the expansion of our FIBC production facility in
Bangladesh and a growing sales organisation. Support departments, such as HR, Finance, IT and Marketing & Communications, have also expanded their teams due to conscious investments. In 2020 we expect to welcome even more colleagues in all areas of the LC World.

Excellent and fast service in Agri
Mediterranean agri packaging is a fast-moving, highly competitive market where we distinguish ourselves with our excellent and fast service, because we have large volumes of products in stock and assure extremely fast deliveries. Here, prices are more competitive, but we still prefer to sell a little less with better margins.
Over the years, we have continually shown a 5-8% growth increase per year. Our goal is to continue to do so.
